Subject: Houston Regional 2003 Track Meet Results

The eternal rains cleared long enough for us to make it to Houston and to run the entire meet in good weather.  After upsetting Exxon last year by a few points we expected them to really come out strong.  Surprisingly, a strong Shell team showed up and it was basically a 3 team meet.

3000-METER TEAM RACES

Men's 3K -   1st PLACE

9 guys ran for TI.  Scoring is place by 10-year age groups.  The top 5 places are your team score.   We had a 1,1,1,2,2 to take the gold over Shell by 1 point. Off to a good start.

The Women also run in 10 year age groups and the top 4 places score for the team.  We had a 1,1,2,2 to win by 4 points over ExxonMobil.  Off to a great start.

JUMP RELAY -  2nd PLACE

Aaron Hall posted the longest jump (21'10.5") and the highest jump (6'3") of the meet.  Michael Jenkins also jumped very, very well.  Scoring is decathlon style against the record for your age group and a 51 year old from Exxon made some good jumps to help them edge us for the gold.

WEIGHT RELAY   1st PLACE

Dave and Lonnie are both at the top end of their 5 year age group this year, but that didn't matter.  They were the top two overall scorers at the meet and had the longest shot and discus throws of the day.  Look out next year!

MEN'S MILE  - 3rd PLACE

We were much stronger this year.  Unfortunately, so was the competition!   A tight finish with the top 4 runners all between 4:35.4 and 4:39.5.   Jim Dietz was a 43 year old among a group of runners in their mid-20's and still finished in that top pack.

SUBMASTER'S DISTANCE MEDLEY   -   1st PLACE

We fielded a powerful team and they all ran very well to place Scott right behind the Exxon runner.   Scott stalked him for 3 laps then blew past to win by over 7 seconds.

WOMEN'S 800-METERS     -   1st PLACE and 3rd Place

We have some great women on our team.   So many, in fact, that I entered (3) teams in the 800.   The "A" team of Lita and Becky finished overall 1st and 2nd for the gold. Laura and Margaret were 5th and 6th overall to grab the bronze medal.

3-LAP SPRINT   2nd PLACE

I'm disappointed that our (2) 400m runners didn't show up, but I'm so proud of the guys who jumped in to fill their place.  Rookies Terra McCreight and Michael Wilson got us off to a great start.  Joe DeLaCruz at age 43 ran with the young kids and held his own.   Benjamin moved up to the 400 and got us a 2nd place behind Shell.

EXECUTIVE RELAY  -  1st PLACE

We got Dietz into a comfortable lead and he powered around for the victory.  Eric and Brad were so solid that we won by almost 50 seconds, making my leg insignificant.  However, less than 11 months after I completely tore my hamstring at Nationals I ran only 1 second slower than last year - encouraging!

DISTANCE MEDLEY RELAY  (1600-1600-800-800-1600) -  3rd PLACE

We usually drop this event, but we had enough people to field a team this year.  Rookie Erica Peterson led us off with a good mile, Dennis Wade ran a blistering 5:12 mile in the 40+ leg.   Rookies Mark Johnson and Todd Hahn ran a good pair of 800's and JJ, despite being over 50 years old, ran in the open age anchor to get us the bronze.

WOMEN'S RELAY   -  1st PLACE

You can quote me - our women are awesome.    Laura took it out strong for the lead and rookie Casey Hyman went under 70 seconds to give Kelly a good lead.  Kelly poured it on for a ONE MINUTE margin of victory!  We almost lapped the last team.

SUBMASTER'S SPRINT MEDLEY   -  1st PLACE

We had a very strong team and they set Luke up for an easy last 800.  Luke was running smart because he knew I would need him for a 3rd event to replace our missing young 400m males.  Luke Luo - fast AND smart!

PRESIDENT'S RELAY  (800-400-800) -  1st PLACE

The rules in Houston allow VP direct reports to run, so we pulled a TI Fellow and  2 direct reports .   This team (2 females and 1 male) dominated the other all -male teams to win by over 25 seconds.  Lita ran right with the first pack of male 800 runners and Mariquita left all the 400m runners WAY behind.  The only problem with this race was that no one in the stands got the splits - D-oh!!!  Times are estimated.

I was still juggling folks to insure we could field a sprint relay team.  Dietz jumped in for his 3rd event of the day and we took a solid 2nd place.

MASTER'S RELAY   -  1st PLACE

We fielded two Masters Teams.  Our lead team coasted through for a 10 second victory.  Our "B" team took 4th.  Had I not been using all of our Master's runners to run in OPEN events I could have probably fielded 3 teams and swept the entire event.   Yes, our over 40 crowd is that good.

SPRINT RELAY   - 1st PLACE

We fielded two teams so some people could get a chance to run a second (or third) event.  I pulled two middle distance runners (Rookie Joe Rule and 39 year old Luke Luo) down to run the 400m legs and they did great.   We were in position to win until Randy rolled his ankle 5 steps into his leg.  Fortunately he managed not to fall or pull, but he lost about 1 second.  Aaron Hall, after jumping out in the sun all day ran a blazing 200m leg but missed catching Shell by 0.2 seconds.  Our "B" team with Becky Riggle running an open male 400 leg managed to finish 5th.

TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

One word for this year - DOMINATE.   We had our largest team ever, highest team score (and probably a meet record), our largest margin of victory (and probably a meet record), and the most GOLD medal teams with 10 of the 16 events (probably a meet record).   All 16 of our teams medaled - 10 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze.

It was a total team effort and every single person played a role in winning the team title.   Thanks to everyone  - Rio for the coaching, Dennis for managing uniforms, Cynthia for the financial management, Eric Stotzer for the tent canopy/drinks/ice, and every one of you who came, contributed, and demonstrated what teamwork is all about.

OVERALL TOTALS (16 events with lowest 3 scores dropped)

1st - TI                      16  events, drop 3 for 186 points

2nd - Shell                 15 events, drop 2 for 158 points

3rd -  ExxonMobil       16 events, drop 3 for 156 points

4th -  ExxonMobil B     9 events for  66 points

5th -  Shell B               5  events for 34 points

6th -  Chevron Texaco  4 events for 33 points

7th -  TI - B                 3 events for  25  points

Thanks for representing TI with such class and outstanding teamwork.

Paul
