Subject: Houston Track Meet Summary

Wow, what a performance by every single person on the team.  Here it is - the annual "Chuck Hull" memorial (he's still alive and well, just not at TI anymore) Houston meet summary.

Overall Summary - Last year we only entered 10 of the 16 events and took 2nd to Exxon (Now Exxon/Mobil).  We wanted to enter more events this year and go for the team title.  Here's how the day unfolded:

3000-METER TEAM RACES

Men's 3K -  2nd place

Scales, Richard -  10:54.3  - 1st overall, 1st in age group

Jenkins, JJ  -   10:26.5   - 3rd in age group

Stotzer, Eric -  11:37.3  - 4th in age group

King, Rio -  11:55.3  - 4th in age group

Brodhead, Bill - 11:54.79  - 6th in age group

Suchyta, Tom  - 12:19.6 - 6th in age group

Good performances by everyone.  Rich was so far in front he stopped to save a cat from a burning building and still won.   Former TIer Robert Isles brought out a strong AMD team to take the team title.

Women's  3K - 2nd place

Riggle, Becky  -  12:12.3 - 1st overall, 1st in age group

Samilton, Cynthia  -  13:58.3  -  1st in age group

Scales, Fanny - 12:48.4  -  2nd in age group

Ceyhan , Pinar - 16:42.8  -  4th in age group

Great performances by all.  I especially love to see people like Pinar (from TI Houston) come out and help us field a team.   The girls were edged out by a single point.  Exxon had the only 50 year old female running and she naturally got a first in her age group!

JUMP RELAY    - 5th place

Berry   -  HJ 3'08",  LJ  12'07"

Sucher  -  HJ  4'02",  LJ  12'9.25"

The ultimate team players both "jumped" in to get us some points.   Sucher last jumped in about middle school and Berry had never high jumped before.   Berry cleared two heights before she slipped on the wet track and hurt her wrist.   THANKS TEAM PLAYERS!

WEIGHT RELAY   1st PLACE
Lewis, Lonnie   shot  39'11.25" (longest overall), discus 105'07.25 "   = 1256.5 points

Rothenbury, Dave  shot 36'07.25", discus 138'04.50 " (longest overall)   = 1222.2 points

One word - DOMINATE.    Lonnie was over 3 feet ahead of the next best shot throw and Dave threw the discuss 22 feet farther than the next best toss !!!

MEN'S MILE  - 3rd place
Scales, Richard -  4:59.0  - 3rd overall

Sucher, Brad - 5:40 - 7th overall

Excellent running by our pair of TIers in a tough mile field.   Sucher works this event in around his high jump turns!

SUBMASTER'S DISTANCE MEDLEY   -  4th place

(800m)M 35+/30+ -  King - 2:42

(400m)F 30+ -  Toliver  - 68

(1200m)M 35+/30+ - Suchyta  - 4:34

(1600m)M 30+/35+ - Stotzer   - 5:38

Rio hops in for a missing runner and gives up 20 years on the others, Robin is her usual powerhouse self, and two of our Houston runners bring it home.   Stotzer runs a PR in the 1600m.   Can't ask for anything more from these folks - but I will - soon !!!

WOMEN'S 800-METERS     1st PLACE
Riggle, Becky - 2:41.25 - 1st overall

Scales, Fanny - 2:52.59  - 4th overall
Becky, who doesn't run the 800, decides she wants the same spot she had in the 3K - in front of everyone.   Fanny, who is also not an 800 runner, runs a great race and we have a gold medal pair.

3-LAP SPRINT   1st PLACE

F O (200m)  Samilton  - 31.49
M O (200m)  Hogg -  26.52
M O (400m)   Sarpong -  54. 99
M O  (400m)    Thomas -   53.90
   total                              2:46.90

Samilton substitutes for a missing runner and gives away a few years, but not many yards.  Hogg runs his first of 3 races.   Sarpong takes control of the race and let's Thomas take a nice stroll around for the victory.

EXECUTIVE RELAY   -  1st PLACE
M 25+JG28+  (800m) Stotzer  - 2:45.41
M 30+JG28+  (400m) Westbrook  -  58.55
M 30+JG28+   (800m)  Brodhead  - 2:39.29

 M 30+JG28+ (1600m)  Scales  - 5:07.25
   total                                 11:30.50

Stotzer is still recovering from his PR in the 1600, but he hangs with the pack giving me a chance to pass 2 guys (your check is in the mail).  One guy has the nerve to get ahead of Brodhead so Scales, on his 3rd event, makes him pay and catches him in the last 200m.

DISTANCE MEDLEY RELAY  (1600-1600-800-800-1600)

We had to drop this event due to a couple of no-shows.

WOMEN'S RELAY   -  2nd place
F O  (800m)   Riggle -  2:40 .76
F O   (400m)    Berry - 1:18.60

F 30+  (400m)    Toliver - 1:07.39
   total                            5:06.75

There goes Riggle out in front again.   Berry, who volunteered to high jump for the first time in her life had just fallen on the wet surface minutes before the race.   She hops in and makes it around and Toliver brings it home.

 SUBMASTER'S SPRINT MEDLEY   -  1st PLACE
F 30+  (200m)    Samilton -  32.25
M 35+ (200m)   Westbrook  - 24.68
M 30+ (400m)    Hogg   -  60.10

M 35+ (800m)  Jenkins  - 2:25.07

   total                                4:22.1

Samilton, Hogg, and I do our part to put Jenkins right in the race.   He stalks the Exxon runner then blasts him with 200m to go before sauntering across the finish line.

PRESIDENT'S RELAY  (800-400-800)    (NOT ENTERED)

Only one team ran.  This could have been an automatic second place with 3 VP's out taking a jog.

PYRAMID RELAY  (400-800-1200-800-400)

Dropped due to no shows.

MASTER'S RELAY   -  3rd place

M 40+ (800m)   Brodhead -  2:38. 5

F 40+  (400m)  Samilton   -  1:24.8
M 40+ (800m)     Jenkins  - 2:48.7
  total                                  6:51.09

Brodhead and Jenkins in their 3rd event of the day and Samilton in her 4TH, muster up enough energy to get a bronze.

 SPRINT RELAY   - 1st PLACE *

F O (200m)  Riggle  -  33.86
F O (200m)  Toliver -  28.87
M O (400m)  Sarpong  - 55.28

M O (400m)   Thomas   - 51.06

M 40+ (200m)  Johnson  - 25.04
M O (200m)  Hogg  -  26.46
  total                         3:40.57

Berry's injured wrist was not looking good and we were out of females.   We either had to drop the event or put Becky "Superwoman" Riggle in there.   Becky hops in and kicks butt in the 200 in her 4th event of the day.   Everyone right down the list runs well and puts it away before Bo even has the stick.

* Unfortunately, the rule is that no runner may enter more than three running events (I argued that Becky's 3K shouldn't count - it should only be 3 TRACK events, but they are correct about the 3 RUNNING event rule).   Someone protested and we had to be disqualified for this race.   We know we won it and we got some good times from folks.  Even keeping this event would have left us short of the overall title.

OVERALL TOTALS

1st - Exxon/Mobil   15 events (drop 2) for 183 points

2nd - TI                 12 events for 146 points

3rd - Enron            16 events (drop 3) for 135 points

4th - AMD              14 events (drop 1) for 132 points

5th - Enron B

6th - Exxon/Mobil B

7th - Shell

8th - AMD B

9th - AMD C

To win the team title we need more people.   It's the same thing at the nationals - we always have to rely on working too few people very hard.  We need more depth.   If you've been reading these e-mails and sitting on the sideline please come out and give it a shot.

The people who were there did all that anyone could ask.  You folks were GREAT.   Special thanks to Rich for organizing the folks from Houston, and Rio and Bo for all the coaching help all year.  Julia, I hope your wrist is OK - let me know how you are.

Thank You All,

Paul Westbrook
